On the 24th of February 2015, the Ministry of Culture and Novateca Program made public the list of districts and public libraries selected to join the growing network of modern Moldovan libraries. In this round of selection, another 350 public libraries will be equipped with more than 1.200 computers, software and peripheral equipment to facilitate public access, free of charge, to internet and online informational resources. Moreover, 400 librarians will be trained in information technology and modern library services.
Twenty-three district libraries with 358 rural libraries have applied to join the existing Novateca network which currently includes over 400 members. Each of the selected libraries is supported by local authorities who understand and appreciate the unique value brought by the library to local communities. Districts finalists were evaluated and selected by a committee composed of various representatives and key players among public libraries in Moldova. All selected districts meet the necessary criteria for equipment maintenance and ensure a safe and comfortable environment for library users.
Since June 2015, Novateca will begin to deliver computers and will start the training courses for librarians selected for the new round of the program. Towards the end of 2015, Novateca network will consist of more than 750 modern libraries, which is a firm step in transforming Moldova’s public libraries into a platform for active and fundamental institutions for community development.
In 2014, the Novateca program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in collaboration with USAID and implemented by IREX Moldova, evolved from a pilot program in a nationwide program. Over the next four years, Novateca program’s primary aim is to facilitate the modernization of public libraries and to transform them into vibrant community centers that can contribute to quality of life improvement for Moldovan citizens. Information about the next round of selection for Novateca network will be released by the end of 2015.
