Grigore Vieru is the best known and beloved Moldovan modern poet. Poet of the nation, unique in his way of being, he knew best how to create lyrics that make us reflect about the most sensitive topics: mother, country, language, love, childhood.
He debuted with a volume of poems for children, followed by many others such as "Thanks for peace", "Beautiful, our language" and of course the "ABC", published in collaboration with the writer Spiridon Vangheli and painter Igor Vieru. His poems for children have extraordinary sensitivity and are combined in perfect harmony with deep sub-textual meanings.
The volume of lyric poetry "Your name" with a preface by Ion Druţă brings a change in the destiny of the poet. The work is considered by literary critics an original poetic work and is an object of study in university courses regarding contemporary literature. The book's first edition belongs’ to the Bessarabian postwar poetry and contains dedications to great personalities of Romanian literature such as Tudor Arghezi, Lucian Blaga, NicolaeLabis, Marin Sorescu.
Grigore Vieru’s lyrics glorify the mother's face, evoke the village, the parental home and describe the pain and sufferings of the Bessarabian people. He was a great patriot of our country, inspiring us through his creation with deep feelings of love for mother, nation, and homeland. He surprised us with eternal masterpieces like "I miss You mother", "Home", "Parental home", "For her", "Romanian language", "Sorrowfulness Bessarabia" etc.
Grigore Vieru received the most prestigious international award in the field of children literature - Honorary diploma Andersen. He was given the honorary title of People's Writer and the Order of the Republic of Moldova. He passed away on the18th of January 2009 after a tragic car accident. Nevertheless, Grigore Vieru remains alive in our memory, contributing in a special way to the revival of national and human values.
